If you’ve been considering polished concrete for your next project, until now there have only been two choices available. Either grind the existing concrete floor or install a concrete screed in excess of 50mm thick over the existing floor.

There are significant limitations associated with polishing existing concrete; The contractor cannot guarantee what the finished product will look like until they have finished grinding, footprints and screed marks are almost always noticeable, inconsistent aggregate exposure, cracking, colour uncertainty and more. Because of its thickness, it is very difficult to install to existing properties. The screed will add large additional weight and will result in several issues with meeting existing door and window heights. The process is inefficient and can result in substandard finishes. The whole process is a messy one and will always crack.

Depending on the concreter’s experience, this type of finish will in all likelihood have inconsistent aggregate exposure.

The Benefits of Pangaea

Being a veneer, it can be finished at thicknesses from as little as 6mm-15mm. Typically 10mm is an average thickness which can adjoin other floor coverings such as tiles and carpet enabling it to be unique and complementary to other floor finishes. The PCV can be installed on top of concrete, stable tiles and other sound substrates. Pangæa PCV™is seamless and dimensionally stable, therefore no expansion joints or saw cuts are necessary unless there are existing saw cuts in the substrate or existing movement/construction joints (these must be honoured). This allows for minimal maintenance and most importantly means cleaning is as simple as a mop and neutral cleaner as there are no grout lines!

Pangæa PCV™ has been designed and engineered to be consistent in colour and aggregate exposure so a Pangæa PCV™ floor installed in Melbourne can be made to replicate one in Perth. However, the Pangæa PCV™ is not limited to one look, another popular benefit of Pangæa PCV™ is the ability to control the gloss levels and to an extent, the aggregate exposure.

Wide Selection of Colours

Pangæa PCV™ comes in a range of colours, aggregates and finishes. The process of selecting your Pangæa PCV™ floor is easy:

1. Select one of our 11 colours on offer (visit our colour selection page)

2. Select from our range of aggregates (3 standard and for larger projects our specialty range)

3. Select satin or gloss finish in our full polish system or matte to gloss in our coated finish

With so many benefits, its not hard to see why the interest in Pangæa PCV™ is vastly expanding.

Pangaea FAQ

As Pangæa PCV is a liquid-applied material, all cabinetry, furniture, skirtings, kitchen kickers, etc. should be removed. Up to 10mm space is required from all vertical surfaces due to the limitations of grinding/polishing equipment.
Pangaea licensed contractors will endeavour to minimise dust, however due to the nature of the initial polishing process some dust is inevitable.
As beautiful as Pangæa® PCV is, it is a hand-made and laid product and some minor imperfections may be noticeable under close scrutiny, i.e. uneven aggregate exposure, minor hairline scratches from the grinding/polishing process, pin-holes from entrapped air in the mix. These are considered part of the product’s character and design, which makes every Pangaea floor uniquely attractive and desirable. Please consult your Pangaea representative for samples that are indicative of the finish.
Pangæa® PCV in itself is not designed to expand or contract(it is dimensionally stable), it will however crack if there is sufficient movement in the substrate (surface) that it is laid on. No warranty is expressed or implied for cracking of Pangæa® PCV due to substrate movement.
Pangæa® PCV is repairable and can be virtually invisibly mended if required due to unforeseen circumstances.
Depending on the sealer or coating selected, Pangæa® PCV is very stain repellent. Harsh chemicals should be avoided when cleaning and only neutral cleaners should be used. Vinegar, lemon juice, sauces, and all acidic and high-alkaline chemicals should be cleaned up promptly to avoid etching of the surface.
If you choose Pangæa® PCV, which is mechanically polished there are no coatings to wear off, however every 2-3 years a clean, buff and re-application of the penetrating sealer will lift and prolong the lustre and life of the floor. Pangæa® PCV can have coatings applied much the same as traditional timber floors and should be cared for in much the same way, withthe re-coat time dependent on the use of the floor. Generally a light sand and 1 coat is all that is required to return the floor to new condition.
Pangæa® PCV has been designed primarily as an internal floor covering, however can be used in covered outdoor areas. It is not suitable for paths, ramps, pool surrounds and driveway
Preparation will vary for each floor. In general, it takes one day to grind, patch and prepare the substrate where required, plus priming and masking up the walls. Once the preparation is complete, our experienced installers can comfortably pour an area of 150 m2 (per team) in about a day, at 12 mm thick. The follow day we begin the grinding process. The floor is then refined through numerous polishing stages to a matte, satin or gloss finish. Depending on the size of the area, we polish and seal on days 4 -5. On small jobs you are still looking at 3-4 days.
The price varies according to the colour, condition of the slab and the size of the area. Please note: if out-of-hours work is required this would incur additional costs.
