What is Microcement?

Microcement is a super-thin cement-polymer coating that creates the attractive, solid look of concrete with just a few millimetres of overlay. This highly versatile finish can be applied to floors, walls, shelves, joinery, and nearly any other surface. You get the seamlessness and durability of concrete while meeting the most exacting limitations. Little wonder that a microcement finish is in high demand among architects, interior designers, and property developers.

Key Characteristics of Microcement:

  1. Super-thin Application: Microcement is applied in the thinnest of layers, usually ranging from 2 to 3 millimetres. This makes it a lightweight option for surfaces that cannot tolerate overlays that add a significant amount of thickness or weight.
  2. Seamless Finish: Once applied and properly sealed, microcement creates a seamless and continuous surface. There are no grout lines or joints that are common in other flooring or wall finishes.
  3. Wide Range of Colours and Finishes: Microcement is available in a variety of colours. It can also be customized to achieve different finishes, such as matte, satin, glossy, or textured.
  4. Waterproof: Properly sealed microcement is resistant to water. It is suitable for use in bathrooms, kitchens, and other areas that require moisture-proofing.
  5. Versatility: Microcement can laid on floors, walls, countertops, joinery, and even furniture. Its versatility allows you to create customized designs on nearly any surface and affords you many options to address technical challenges.
  6. Durable: Microcement overlays are also durable and resistant to wear and tear, making these suitable for areas or items that are subject to relatively heavy use or high traffic.

The application of microcement requires skill and expertise to ensure a proper and long-lasting finish. For proper results, it is best that you hire professionals for the installation process.

FAQ

Microcement (also called microconcrete, micro screed, or micro render) is an ultra-thin, decorative overlay or coating applied to surfaces like floors and walls. It is typically made from a mixture of cement, polymers, and other fine aggregates. When applied, it creates the effect of a solid and seamless concrete surface. Microcement can be laid on nearly any surface and area, including walls, floors, furniture, built-in shelving, and joinery.

Microcement overlays are extremely thin. The average thickness is typically from 2 to 5 millimetres.

Microcement overlays can be applied to various surfaces, including existing concrete, stone, timber, plywood, MDF, tiles, etc. However, please contact us at Honestone for advice and more details on how your particular application should be conducted.

Yes, microcement is a suitable finish for high-humidity or wet areas, including bathroom surfaces. When properly applied and sealed, it is a durable and water-resistant overlay.  However, proper installation is critical. Please contact us at Honestone for advice and more details if you plan on having microcement in such conditions.

Microcement is generally durable and can withstand exposure to relatively high temperatures. So it is a suitable option for patios, kitchens, and outdoor barbecue areas, where it can be applied to both floors and walls. However, for specific spots that must endure more extreme heat (i.e., close to an oven or furnace; intense sunlight or desert conditions), such temperatures may affect its longevity and performance.

To enhance microcement resistance to heat or extreme outdoor conditions, consult us at Honestone regarding proper installation, sealing and maintenance.

Yes, provided the heating system (piped water or electrical) is within or behind a separate concrete layer of at least 35-40 mm thick.

While it does vary slightly for each floor, our standard microcement installation (from preparation to final sealing) for floors up to 200 sqm. in size take approximately 5-7 days.

No, microcement or microconcrete is a seamless finish.

We prefer to be the last trade in to install your microconcrete floors. However, it is best to install skirtings on top of the new floor after its installation. When this is not possible, while it cures the floor must be protected with breathable cloth and 3mm MDF boards (or their equivalent).

That will depend on the specific microcement formula and finish you choose, and where its application is located. If you choose Honestone to install it, we will make sure each floor space we make for you undergoes a slip test by a qualified certifier. There won’t be guesswork when you manage safety issues.

Microcements overlays do not crack on their own. However, since they are bonded directly to a substrate, any movement that may occur within that underlaying layer will affect the finished microcement floor or wall.

This will depend on the specific finish you want and the size of the area to be covered.  For further information, please contact Honestone’s technical support experts at info@honestone.com.au.
